What is this?
What Do You Know About Web 2.0 is an 8 week self-guided learning program designed to provide you with an opportunity to discover and explore some of the Web 2.0 technologies many of our patrons are using everyday. All the information you need to complete the exercises is provided and we want you to succeed. Work at your own pace, but feel free to share your experiences and discoveries.
Who can participate?
What Do You Know About Web 2.0? is open to all full and part-time Mount Prospect Public Library staff. Some staff are required to participate. Staff not required, but who are interested, should check with their manager for approval.
Staff Required to Participate:
- All full-time staff
- Some part-time staff (Part-time staff, please check with your manager to find out if you are required.)
What are the prizes?
- Just for completing the first 2 topics by September 30th, you will receive a Caribou specialty drink to celebrate. If you will not be here the day drinks are delivered, please contact the Learning 2.0 Team. Special thanks to the Morale Committee and the Friends of the Library.
- Everyone who completes the first 5 topics will receive a 1 GB Flash Drive. This device will be used to complete Topic 6.
- Everyone who completes all 6 topics in 8 weeks will be entered in a raffle for great prizes -- an 8g iPod Touch, two 4g iPod Nanos and a Nintendo DS Lite with Brain Age 2.
- A very special thanks to the Friends of the Library for their generous donation!
How much time will this take?
Each Topic's exercises will take approximately one hour. They should be completed during your scheduled work hours. This is a self-paced program and some may move much more quickly than others. If you start to hit the one hour mark and need some assistance, feel free to ask.
Where can I go for help?
Any Learning 2.0 Team (L2T) member (Michelle Vonderhaar, Julie Collins or Cynthia Dieden) can help you. Also, the Training room has been reserved for you to use. Here is the schedule. A member of the L2T will be in the Training Room during these scheduled times to help you if you get stuck or frustrated.
How long do I have to complete the program?
This learning program begins on Staff Inservice Day, September 12, 2008, and will run until November 7, 2008. You will have 8 weeks to complete the exercises associated with the 6 topics.
What if I can't finish by November 7?
You will still be able to work on the program and finish when you are able, but you will not be eligible for entry in the raffle for the final prizes.
How will I know which exercise to do and when to do them?
Each week (on Fridays) the L2T will post a new topic with the related exercises on this wiki. There will be 6 topics in all, so the final 2 weeks will be for catch-up.
How will my progress be measured?
You will record your exeriences/impressions on your blog as you complete the exercise for each topic.
Why do I have to blog?
The Learning 2.0 Team (L2T) will be viewing the blog you create to track your progress in the program. Once created, you will register your blog by emailing learning2.0team@mppl.org. In the email include YOUR NAME, YOUR BLOG NAME, and YOUR BLOG URL.
What if I don't want anyone to know who I am?
Your blog for this program may be anonymous. You can choose to share your blog with others if you wish, but that is up to you. Only the L2T will know which staff member authored which blog.
I'm required to participate, how will my manager be notified?
The L2T will notify all managers when their employee starts and completes the program.
I don't have a digital camera, what do I do?
In Topic 6, one of your choices is to use a digital camera. If you do not have access to one, the Library has three digital cameras that may be available. See E*vents for availability.
Have other area libraries offered similar programs?
Many other libraries have successfully offered this type of learning program. If you would like more information about these other programs visit Park Ridge Public Library's All Wired Up , Schaumburg District Township Library's Schaumburg 2.0, or Ten Things @ Skokie Public Library. The L2T thanks all of these libraries for their inspiration and good advice!
When will the drawing take place for the final prizes?
The drawing will take place on Monday, November 17, 2008.
