About the Program

What is a Wiki? (officially)

A wiki is a collection of web pages designed to enable anyone who accesses it to contribute or modify content, using a simplified markup language. Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites. The collaborative encyclopedia, Wikipedia, is one of the best-known wikis. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WIKI

(Unofficially)

A wiki is THE 2.0 organizational tool.  Many companies, organizations and institutions are using wikis to help organize information that groups collect during meetings, etc. The Staff Inservice Committee and the Staff Training Workgroup used a wiki to help in the planning of this year's Staff Inservice Day. (BTW, this is a wiki : )

What makes a wiki such a good tool?

  • You can share information easily
  • You can create discussion pages for any group
  • Your information is searchable
  • You and all the others in your group can edit pages and add information at anytime
  • You DO NOT need to know HTML to create, edit, or add information to a wiki (even though it is a web page)

Watch this for more about how wikis work!

Now let's use this technology!

First

Discover for yourself the organizational and collaborative strengths of wikis. Read the following article, Using Wikis to Create Online Communities.

Second

Add content to MPPL's new favorite things wiki.

1.     Go to MPPLfavorites

2.     Log in using the "usual" password. (If you are unsure of the password, contact Michelle, Julie, or Cynthia)

3.     Pick a page and add your favorite thing. (You will see the pages on the right in the Side Bar.)

4.     Remember this is your time to experience how to use a wiki. Add content (even new pages), correct

mistakes if you'd like, or help in the organization of the pages.

Third

Now blog about your experiences working with the MPPL Favorite Things wiki, iInclude your thoughts about how you may use a wiki to share information with your department. You may also include in your blog entry what the word wiki means in Hawaiian.

Now that you have finished Topics 1 and 2 (by September 26) you are eligible for for a Free Caribou Drink during Specialty Drink Day --  October 9!  Sign up as you usually do and email the Learning 2.0 Team.  We will pay your dollar!
